Creating an Abstract Painting from Start to Finish

Writer: Jennifer RiceJennifer Rice

For the latest abstract painting I have created I am going to share with you the techniques I used to make it and why I decided to do it the way I did.

To start with, I used the following tools for this painting;

Blank canvas

Acrylic paint

Wooden turntable

Brushes of various sizes

Paint pallet

To start a painting such as this, I had to decide what colors I wanted to use. Color is very important because it sets the mood of the whole painting. In this particular painting, there are 5 sections independent of each other. The section that came first is the center, which is the main section.

The main circle started out with teal blue and yellow, which I applied in a circular motion as I turned the canvas, then I used a brush to combine the edges of the teal and yellow into a circle. Then I added in the brown around the outer edge and dripped red drops around the edge of the brown. The blue dots were then added and dripping of black, red and orange for the center.

The most relaxing part of creating a painting this way is the feeling of relaxation that comes with watching the drips of paint, at least that's what I love!

To create the other outer designs, I used the dripping method with different colors I decided to use. In the centers of them I took the end of a brush and swirled the colors a little bit to create the look.

Doing abstract paintings and drawings is so rewarding for your mind. For me, it is a type of art therapy. I can express myself so much with color which is something that people know about my creations.... They are colorful!

The take-away today is simply using art as therapy for yourself and your family. Whatever your abstract painting looks like, the fun of creating it is the point. I would love to hear your thoughts and see your creations, so stay colorful!

Much Love,

Jennifer
